    help.... can't understand

In the case of any person whose judgment is really deserving of confidence, how has it become so? Because he has kept his mind open to criticism of his opinions and conduct. Because it has been his practice to listen to all that could be said againsthim; to profit by as much of it as was just, and expound to himself, and upon occasion to others, the fallacy of what was fallacious.

I can't understand underlined part. please explain its stucture and meaning.

    Thank you, always...

    Re: help.... can't understand

I don't know what you mean by "structure" but "to profit by as much of it as was just" would mean that he likes to benefit ethically from the situation.
benefit ethically could also be explained as to gain something in return morally
sorry if i didn't explain that very well.
