Well, I was reading some news on BBC World web site and the headline was:
"Iraq's PM longs to leave office"
I didn't undertand this word - longs - here. What does it mean?
'longs' in this sentence about Iraq's Prime Minister comes from the word 'longing'. Longing means a desire or need which someone has held for some time and is unfulfilled. So you could say the PM has wanted to give up his job for some time, but has to carry on because on one else wants the job.
Is this helpful?
