    What's my mistake?

Learning and understanding through argument discussions are the foremost expectations target into argument discussions among students.

In word doc.., the "are" is showed grammatically wrong. Please someone explains my mistake? Thanks.

Be careful with the Word grammar check- it often produces erros. Here, the qwuestion would be whether 'learnibng and understanding' are two separate things, which Word thiks (based on the use of 'and') or a single process as you think. Ignore Word grammar check sometimes. However, the second part of the sentence reads badly.

Yes, "are" is wrong because "learning and understanding" is considered as one process.

Please points out the second part of the sentence that reads badly, Tdol! Thanks.

    How about:
Learning and understanding through argument and discussion is the primary aim of (or 'motive for') discussions among students.
I am a bit lost about what to do with 'expectations'.

But 'discussions' is not the subject of the sentence. The question is whether 'learning and understanding' should be considered as a single unit or as two separate things.

    Hi Tdol

In my opinion "learning and understanding" should be considered as two separate things in the process [ for instance] of acquiring or studying a foreign language.

e.g. ESL students demonstrate and deepen their learning [of English] and understanding of basic knowledge and skills.
