I read journals saying " Today was fun. or today was a very important day for me"...could we use "was" with today? I mean, the speaker writes the journal in the evening before he sleeps...

I don't see the problem - unless (aha - just read the thread's title)...

It's a question of mental distance from the events of the day:

    At lunchtime you might say

Today has been fun so far, but the afternoon could be boring.

But when someone's writing his journal, he might well write 'Today was fun'. The day is over and done with; it was fun. [switches off bed-side light]

On the other hand, if (in the journal-writing situation) he's viewing the day as the first of several, he might write

Today has been fun. Let's hope the rest of the holiday is as good.
