    there and over there

    which of the following is correct?
    1. my friend is there
    2. my friend is over there
    when should one use there/overthere can they be used interchangeably?

    Not interchangeably, though sometimes it's possible to substitute one for the other without seriously damaging the meaning. Generally, 'over there' is further away than 'there'.

    But when reinforced by 'right', they're very different:

    Can you see the ship right over there. [Maybe you can't]

    But -

    How can you have missed your keys? They were right there on the table all the time.
