    His Ego

    Dear Teachers,

    A. Everytime I try to talk to him about it he gets really defensive and we don’t get anywhere.
    - What does “we don’t get anywhere” mean?

    B. His ego is beaten up and he doesn’t feel like much of a man.
    - What does “he doesn’t feel like much of a man” mean?

    Thanks a million

"We don't get anywhere" means that nothing is accomplished in the conversation. Look at a consersation as a journey that leads toward knowledge. If one person needs the help of the other person in order to take the journey, and the second person does not cooperate, then they have not travelled from ignorance to knowledge.

"He doesn't feel like much of a man" means that in his own opinion, he did not show honor, character, respect, etc.

The man concerned has been psychologically battered and therefore he no longer feels that he is a proper person. "Man" is stereotypically strong, masculine, assertive. This man has become unsure and weak.
