    He was in a rhythm.

    I am reading a novel, Pelican Brief, written by John Grisham, Will you read the following and let me know what the underlined sentences mean?
    He fumed over Garcia for thirty minutes, then fell asleep.
    He was in a rhythm and dead to the world.

    He's asleep, so it refers to the rhythm of his breathing.
