    Please explain what's the difference between:

    He went to Amsterdam.
    He had gone to Amsterdam.

    Using my legendary artistic skills, I've done a little picture to show the sequence of events. After this, you would say 'I went to see John last week, but his wife told me that he had gone to Amsterdam'. (This would have been speech bubble number 6, if I had had room. Just goes to show:
