Smile a pot-bellied pig crossed wit a potato

It was like a black blob with wonky eyes and chewed ears.
If the headline hadn't read--GIVE A DOG A HOME--I might have thought that it was a pot-bellied pig crossed with a potato.

I couldn't figure out what the part in green means--it's Greek to me.

English gurus, please spread some light. Thanks.

Re: a pot-bellied pig crossed wit a potato

A 'pot-bellied pig' is a breed of pig that comes, I believe, from Vietnam. It is quite small, dark, and very ugly.

When animal or vegetable breeders combine two species, they are said to be 'cross-breeding'. This is abbreviated to both a verb (cross - to cross-breed) and a noun (a cross - the result of cross-breeding).

A pot-bellied pig crossed with a potato would small, ugly, ill-formed....
