wistful compassion of a wretched geranium

Everybody said that it was a good change for a little maid who had tried to grow for eight years in a crowded manufacturing town, but as for Sylvia herself, it seemed as if she never had been alive at all before she came to live at the farm. She thought often with wistful compassion of a wretched geranium that belonged to a town neighbor.
    What does this mean?

Re: wistful compassion of a wretched geranium

She was comparing herself to a sickly flower one of her neighbors had in the town where she used to live. When she lived in the town, she was like the flower. Now that she's living on a farm she is not just thriving, but flourishing. She is sad about what she was, and feels compassion for the things she left behind that will not thrive like she has.
