The cow stopped long at the brook to drink

The cow stopped long at the brook to drink, as if the pasture were not half a swamp, and Sylvia stood still and waited [...] while the great twilight moths struck softly against her.
What does 'long' mean in this sentence? Merriam-Webster dictionary gives me 67 definitions on it, and I couldn't bring myself to read all of them. Could you help me with this?

The word "long" here refers to the time: for a long time.

You get the same meaning in the phrase 'to stare long and hard' at something.
