    Question Contents is/are?

    Hi,

During my writing, I always write "the contents of this book refers to" or something like that, so I use the singular form even though "contents" is plural. It's just that it seems to me natural that I use the singular verb form: after that I stop and start thinking it over and know I should use the plural verb form, but still it doesn't look natural to me. Should I say to myself, "You idiot, stop thinking about things you know nothing about, and start using the rules!"? Should I always use plural in this context?

    Thanks,
    Nyggus

PS. By the way, it might be that in Polish contents is singular.

    Hi, Nyggus,
Yes, it’s your native language that causes such mistakes.
The contents of the letter are shocking.
The same goes for police and clothes which are singular in Russian and - correct me if I’m wrong – Polish.

    Regards
