    The feathers

    Hi,
I think there should be no article in the following sentence:
Some used salt or skulls or the feathers of birds [as money].
    What do you think?

    TIA

Hi, Humble, it's my pleasure to have a shot at your question, and my two cents are as follows:

From the limited context you provided, my wildest shot in the dark is that I'd keep the. If not, the base phrase will look like this:

Some used salt or skulls or (some used) feathers of birds [as money].

It has a little bit difference in meaning from the base phrase.

With the limited context, I first thought it was a phrase.
On sencond thought, I could be a sentence, and luckily, it makes no difference to the question of with or without the.

    My reasoning is as follows:

Some (people) used salt or skulls or the (certain) feathers of (certain) birds as money.

It's logical that there are other various kinds of feathers of birds, which are not suitable for tokens of money.

Without the, it signifies all feathers of birds can be used as money. What kind of situation is that? Could you imagine?

    Re: The feathers

    Thanks, P,
But if the birds are not definite, how can feathers be definite? We could also say
They used some feathers of some birds as money.
It looks a bit ugly, though.
