    Are the tenses in this sentence ok?

    They didn`t live to see what they had been waiting for all their life.
    They didn`t live to see what they waited for all their life.

    I agree with riverkid, but I prefer the former to the latter in that there is a temporal adverbial phrase "for all their life" at the end of the base sentence.
