    picking up the pieces

"Hands reach out to the world, befriending and defending as well as picking up the pieces when necessary."

I somehow feel that "picking up the pieces" here has a meaning beyond its literal meaning.
Does it mean to say something like "handling the messy situation"?

I think it implies rescue rather than just handling a situation.

Something is broken, you pick up the pieces, and put it back together. The picture is that you have finished with the shouting/crying/wailing and are making a start on putting it right.

"I heard that your husband left you. How are you coping?"
"Oh, I am picking up the pieces...."
