    tarred her?

maggu's achievemtns are noteworthy. When she lost her eyesight in class IV, the school where she was studying expelled her and asked her to get admitted to a blind school. But Maggu did not want that because she felt it would have tarred her. So, she along with her father, a small time merchant, went to many other public schools. Impressed by her ambition Bluebells Public school admitted her.

What does `tarred her' mean in this paragraph.

    Could anyone explain it?

PS - another meaning for 'tarred' has occurred to me. If you are thought less of because of the company you keep, you are said to be 'tarred with the same brush' (Maybe this is related to tarring and feathering anyway?)

All tarred with the same brush. All alike to blame, all sheep of the same flock. The allusion is to the custom of distinguishing the sheep of any given flock by a common mark with a brush dipped in tar.
