    Smile Shake+speare

    hi,

What does the name (the word) Shakespeare mean? I was studing his sonnets and I wondered if 'Shakespeare' can have a meaning.

    Thank you in advance

Well, here's something rather interesting. Click on this link and scroll down to SHAKESPEARE AND THE VCV FORMULA. Look for, "...was anything special hidden in Shakespeare's name[?]..."

    All the best.

Interesting. But there are many English surnames made from a transitive verb and a noun, and several that involve weapons: Brakespeare, Wagstaff .... I read somewhere that they referred to typical behaviour on the battlefield/in conflict. Presumably a Brakespeare was more to be feared than a Shakespeare! I'll try to dredge up the reference.

    I found this at Nicknames

"Bawdy names: We take the name of England’s foremost dramatist for granted, but William Shakespeare’s surname was not only the nickname for a belligerent person but also... "

Someone who gets sexual satisfaction by exposing his (I think it's always a man) genitalia. I think a woman who did the same sort of thing would be called an exhibitionist.
