GI Joe - "government issue" Joe - means an American serviceman in the Army.

In the British army, the equivalent term is "a Tommy", short for Thomas Atkins, the name used as an example for filling out a soldier's pay book.

GI Joe is also the name of a comic book character and a toy.

G.I. Joe is a very popular action figure. He's called "Action Man" in the UK.
