    Hi,
    Is the article necessary here?
    People expected the 21st century to bring peace on the earth.
    Peace on earth sounds better to me

    I think it's generally used with the definite article though some people miss it while speaking.

    Actually, it's a set phrase. Leave out the article.

    BTW Earth is tricky in terms of articles, now it takes, now it doesn't.

    I think nobody can be sure of the usage of articles. There are so many rules to remember.
