    pour on the pretension

I don't know the meaning of "poured on the pretension" in the following. Would you please give me a hand?

"To separate themselves from the grubby masses, upper-class women poured on the pretension. In Victorian society, comfort was déclassé; discomfort symbolized wealth and status."

    Re: pour on the pretension

"pretension" aspirations or claims to a specified status or quality

Pour on the pretensions - by dressing in corseted, over-decorated clothing, the women are trying to present themselves as better off/wealthier/superior.
