    redeeming character

It means he's not very nice, but he probably has at lease one redeeming character. In this case, it sound like the father was probably very strict with his children, and maybe not very affectionate. However, he still comes home from work every night, and he earns a paycheck to support his family.

    What does `redeeming character' mean?
