    ...closed immediately behind

    He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind.
    OK, so those trees are close to each other and there's a very narrow space / path in between. I get that part. But it closes immediately behind? as in those trees step aside to give you the narrow way and walk back to where they were to close off the space in between them?

    I need some clarification, and I'd much appreciate your help.

    The impression I get is that the trees are so close together, when you look back there appears to be nothing but forest. I also noticed that the author uses road, then narrow path, then closed, all progressively smaller as if the forest is swallowing up the traveler.
