    confusing phrase

    How is it different from "Take a shower"- "take shower"- "take the shower"?

    take a shower is a set expression, one of many with take
    take a chance
    take a seat
    take a fancy

    There are some others, however, that have or have no article:
    take aim
    take advantage
    take the liberty of
