    escorting while in transit

The Task Force Lightning troops were killed on the same day as a car bomb ripped through Baghdad's historic booksellers' market, killing 30 people and injuring 65 others - the first major attack in the Iraqi capital for several days.

What does `Task Force Lightning', `ripped through' means in this sentence?

For more context and background refer to -- http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6421903.stm

    Please explain it.

"Task Force Lightning" is the name of the unit involved in this bombing

You must have seen the effect of a bomb on a building or a street from photographs in the press. The bomb-blast will rip everything in its way into little pieces.
