    passageway = a usually long and narrow part of a building with rooms on one or both sides, or an enclosed path which connects places:


    I can't understand the highlighted parts.

    Please explain it.

    In buildings, there will be long passages with rooms that have doors to the passages. Sometimes there will be rooms on both sides. sometimes there will be rooms on one side only.

    Behind/between houses/buildings, there will be narrow streets between fences or walls, usually only used by people walking. These can also be called passageways.
