She excitedly ripped the parcel open.
Please explain (ripped the parcel open)
I thought that this structure (rip the parcel open) is not because rip open is a phrasal verb, but because it is has the same structure, for example as "He shot the man dead", where we have a verb, an object and an adjective (open, dead, etc.)which indicates the result of the action expressed by the verb.
Another example:" She pushed the door open"
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to ask. I have some difficulty myself when it comes to explaining the syntax of a sentence like this.
You've got me there We'll have to hope that someone who knows more than I do about grammar confirms your correction.
I'm not sure whether it is correct or not.I was just wondering myself.I couldn't find info on this and this is the way I explain it.But I think it works.
I hope somebody knows more on this and let us know!
All the best
hmm...I smell a can of worms here and I don't like squiggly things!
My two cents:
I think you can also say: "She ripped open the package" and "She pushed open the door" but not "She shot dead the man"
Is it just me? Oh, and I don't have a theory either
