    Say or Tell

    Hello,
Can anyone give me some easy explanations to get across the difference between say and tell and when you use them. The class is pre-intermediate.
    Thanks alot.

    Re: Say or Tell

Say is to utter sound; Tell is to give information. For example,

    Tell me your name, please.
    Meaning: Give me that information.

    Say your name, please.
    Meaning: Utter the sounds.

    Tell me the time, please.
    Meaning: Give me that information.

    Say the time, please.
    Meaning: Utter the sounds.

Max told me to call him.
Meaning: Max gave me that information.

    Max said, "Call me."
    Meaning: Max uttered the sounds.

    All the best.
