    sit in a seat

When I'm on a bus, can I say that I'm sitting on a seat? Is the bold part correct? It doesn't sound right to me. If it is wrong, could someone rephrase it for me.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: sit in a seat

It is correct. The "chairs" on buses are referred to as "seats." So you could also say "there are no seats available" or "I had to share my seat with a man who hadn't bathed in a week."

Unless you are not seating in the obvious spots available on the bus (the seats), it is somewhat redundant to specify what you are sitting on...

You should say "I had a seat on the bus". But if, for example, no seats were available on the bus, you may have to explain "I had to sit on a suitcase" or "the child sat (or "is sitting" or "had to sit") on his mother's lap".

    I hope this helps,
    Carol
