I was going through a poem (or Sonnet, for the difference is not known to me) and came across the following lines:
A wise old man was he;
lay down to rest his soul.
The pronoun (he)used here seems incorrect. Is it so?
Selfish was he, and the heart within
for all the world's sorrow it cached.
Is all the world the correct usage?
Please help me with these problems.
The inversions 'A wise old man was he' and 'Selfish was he' are not wrong; they are poetic. I don't think this sort of writing is the best place to start if you're learning English!
