The people of India have decided to make India into a state that controls its own affairs [[having been ruled for the previous 150 years by the British]].

This is VERY formal legalistic language, and is clearly only a part of a sentence.

    Thank you Anglika.

I understood everything other than `sovereign' in the above sentence.

I already referred many dictionaries to understand the meaning of `sovereign'.
But simply, I can't understand it.
So, could you explain with your simple words with refer to my above sentence?

In this context "sovereign" means that the country has sole right of deciding what it will or will not do, without interference from anyone.
