    firebrand apt

South Africa looked determined to overturn their misfortune in World Cups; skipper Hansie Cronje brought to the team a firebrand apt to pull a fast one on the mighty Australians.

Australia skipper Steve Waugh denied the South Africans a win during the Super Sixes, a dropped catch by premier fielder Herschelle Gibbs helped Waugh notch up an unbeaten 120 in that match. But this time, the South Africans were not keen on granting such favours.

Please explain the highlighted group of words
