    pace battery

Kenya’s batting was blown away by New Zealand’s pace battery led by Michael Mason, who returned to the top flight with impressive figures of two for 29 from nine overs. James Franklin and left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori also took two wickets for the Kiwis, while Shane Bond returned with figures of one for 19 from his eight overs.

who returned to the top flight

Top flight = the best [the top of the stairs/ladder - so above everything else]

Michael Mason has shown himself to be extra good at bowling.

As two bowlers are in action (one at each end) at any one time, a side with four good pace bowlers (two in action and two resting, 'turn and turn about') can keep up a constant attack. ('Battery' suggests continuity.)
