    Hi Svartnik

    The most frustrating part is that there is no illustrative sentence which states that it should be: "She asked what the matter was." I hope someone could tell me where I could locate this sentence.

    In Michael Swan's book, it is stated that "I want to know what was the matter" is just as correct as "I want to know what the matter was." But I've read many English usage books, but none states that such sentences with an identical structure could have both versions, either with or without word inversion.

    I hope someone can tell me where I can locate a sentence contaning 'what the matter was' or 'what was the matter', perhaps from an authoritative website.
