    adulteration racket

The 27-year-old IIM graduate was working as a sales officer with the Indian Oil Corporation when he was shot dead on November 19, 2005 for blowing the whistle on the petrol pump adulteration racket run by Monu Mittal and his aide Devesh Agnihotri in Lakhimpur kheri, Uttar Pradesh.

What does `adulteration racket' mean in this context?

    Please explain it.

    Re: adulteration racket

The criminals were putting kerosene into the diesel which was being sold to members of the public. Thy were adulterating the diesel.

The racket is that they paid less for the kerosene, but by adding it to diesel and then selling the result at full diesel price, they were making money.
