    What does it mean?

    Hi..

Please read the below sentence. I don't understand the underlined part.

"The art of writing itself is a good example of what students of the past called

independent invention, since systems of writing have evolved in isolation at

different times in different parts of the world. "

What does " students of the past" mean?

Does it mean people studying the past? Or students lived a long time ago?

    Thank You.

" students of the past" - as you rightly suspect - could mean either; but in this context I think it means the first - people who have studied the past have found examples of independent invention. (But of course the passage could be saying that 'independent invention' is an old/outdated expression - I don't think this is true though, as I haven't met a more common term; besides, they might have been students of anything - so why should they have noticed anything about the history of writing?)

I agree with BobK because "the students of the past" called "independent invention" different types of writing developed independently during the human history, so they studied somehow the history of the art of writing. I think it is definitely about the students who studied the past.
