    There is or There are?

    Should I say 'There is a pen and some pencils.' or 'There are a pen and some pencils.'?

    There is a pen -- the verb concords with the first item's number in the compound noun phrase:

    There are some pencils and a pen.
    There is a pen and some pencils.
