    anything much

    I recently came across this caption under a folder in which there were some photos:

    Only the 'Staff Reunion' folder, has anything much in it for now.

    Can you please explain the syntax of this sentence, please?

    Re: anything much

    Subject and predicate:
    Only the Staff Reunion folder has anything much in it for now

    [only [the Staff Reunion folder]]
    only = adj, the = det, staff = adj, reunion = adj, folder = noun

    [has [anything much in it for now]]
    has = verb
    anything = adj
    much = noun
    in = prep
    it = pronoun
    for =prep
    now = noun

    All the best.

    Note, there shouldn't be a comma between the subject and the verb.

    Only the 'Staff Reunion' folder, has....

    Re: anything much

    Thanks for the detailed reply but can you explain the exact meaning of the sentence? It just doesn't sound right to me as a non-native speaker of English.
    I mean, I would interpret it as 'This is only the Staff Reunion folder, it doesn't have anything much in it for now'.

    Re: anything much

    I think it means that photos and other things have been removed from all similar folders (e.g. The Staff Vacation Folder, The Faculty Reunion Folder, or The Staff Training Folder) and what was left over from these other folders has been put into The Staff Reunion Folder. In other words: Only the Staff Reunion Folder is going to have any of these things; don't bother looking anywhere else.

    RE: Only the 'Staff Reunion' folder, has anything much in it for now.

    I like mykwyner's take on the meaning of anything much, but the reading I got was slightly different: There's something in the Staff Reunion folder, but not much.

    Note that, the phrase anything much doesn't make all that much sense to me in that context. I had to work at the meaning. It seems out of place to me and, moreover, there's that comma splice, folder, has, which makes the sentence appear as if it had been in the processs of being edited and then left unfinished. That would account for why anything much sounds awkward.

    All the best.

    This is what I think.
    With the comma, I stick to my former interpretation:'This is only the Staff Reunion folder, it doesn't have anything much in it for now'.
    Without the comma, mykwynwer's interpretation sounds fine.
    Only the Staff Reunion Folder is going to have any of these things; don't bother looking anywhere else.
    Without the 'only' I would go for Casiopea's interpretation.
    There's something in the Staff Reunion folder, but not much.
