    split up

When a bomb explodes right in front of a crowd, what is the verb to describe the destruction caused by the bomb?

The bodies of all the people in the crowd were split into many pieces.

Is the phrase in bold correct?

Not really. A bomb explodes. The bodies of the people in the crowd were ripped to pieces/were shredded.

"Split" is really too delicate here and "pieces" is a little odd too; "blown to bits"..."torn to shreds"..."blown apart"
    sad thought
