    only ever

Please help me understand this sentence (underlined parts) :

Personally, I only ever display sympathy to my fellow graduates.

"only ever" is positive or negative ? He displays or doesn't display?

    Re: only ever

"I only ever show sympathy to my fellow students. I haven't time to be sympathetic to anyone else"

"ever" adds emphasis to "only". The sentence works as well without it. I suppose you could say it is a negative in this context.
