    Re: That/who/whom

That indirecty modifies the nouns father (who) and sister (who). It directly modifies the nouns here,

the strongest man that I've known.
the kindest person that I've known.

    All the best.

You can use 'that' for people when you are talking about what they do rather than who they are.

"He is the doctor that cured me"
"The plumber that came to fix the pipe"
"The fast runner that won the race"

    Re: That/who/whom

But I see "who/whom" no wrong, why we should you an indirect modifies here?
I've known that "That" can be used for both things and people, but in this sentence, there's "whom", too... Why should I reject "who" and "whom" to get "that"?

    Who/m isn't wrong.

That is the man I saw yesterday
He is the man I saw yesterday

are both correct, but I understand your position as I often use 'who/whom/he/she' rather than 'that'. It feels more polite, but that is a personal position not a grammatical one.

Be careful when you are talking about entities - businesses or organisations. They should be 'that'. The UN, for example, shouldn't be referred to as 'who'.

    Re: That/who/whom

Thanks whitehead, but the sentence above, they just only express your feelings, so I consider both are alright. But my teacher didn't allow "whom", and neither did I understand his explaination.
    What a bad sentence!
Please, give me more detail about it.

    Re: That/who/whom

Ah, about my teacher's explaination, he said that "that" is used in the comparison form.... But I still don't understand why we should choose "that"?

    Here's an another:
Do you understand all_____ he said?
    a) that
    b)what
    c) which
    ????
    Help, I'm lost!
