Thread: Sombrero???

  1. #1

Here is a sentence in an article about globalization, in which I just cannot fathom the meaning of the word "SOMBREROS".
Poor countries have put their hearts, souls, and SOMBREROS into a global good-behaviour contest to see who can offer the barest of barebones wages and the most freedom to poison the environment.
I would very much appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

Sombreros are mainly worn in Mexico and South West America. I think that here it has the connotation of poverty.

There's also a reference to the expression 'bet one's hat' - which means 'stake everything on a hoped for outcome'. I haven't found this in any online reference, but Google gives 'Results 1 - 10 of about 25,900 for "bet my hat"'.
