    Capitalization

When, and if, should you capitalize - southern states or southeastern states?

Exp. The unemployment rate in South Carolina exceeded the U.S. unemployment rate and that of all Southeastern states.

Historically, South Carolina had higher proverty rates when compared to the average poverty rates for other southern states.

    Thanks!

    Re: Capitalization

Traditionally, when referring to common geographic areas of the United States, you capitalize it.

    The Midwest
    The Deep South
    Southern states
    New England
    Pacific Northwest
    Plains states
    etc.
