"Shall I close the door now?" asked the boy.

    1. The boy asked if he should close the door then.

    2. The boy asked if he could close the door then.

To report the above sentence, is #1 or #2 correct?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: correct noun

There were many passengers / people at the bus stop.

Which noun in bold should be used?

If the direct question contains "shall", then should will be used.
If he asked "Can I close the door?", then could will be used.

As to the passengers or people, either is acceptable.
