What is the meaning of "down" in the following?
    Down the river
    Down the road (or street)

    Thank you.

    Re: Down

'Along, in a slightly downward direction' in the case of a river. (Two related adjectives are 'upriver' and 'downriver'; also 'upstream'/'downstream'.)

In the case of a road, there may be an obvious slope. If not, the down may refer to house numbers. Sometimes it just means 'a short way away'.

    Re: Down

    Sorry about the late response.
    Thank you for the answer.
Would down broadway, for instance, mean south of broadway?

    Thank you again
