    Smile which or in which

But then emerged bizarre stories about the manner which/in which the first astronaut had provided for cross-country driving without rest stops.

Should I use which or in which here and why? Thanks.

I believe it is "in which". Nouns "of process" trigger a preposition + relative pronoun (often "by" or "in", but also "with" or "through") combination: process, manner, method etc...
