    And what it takes to

That is where I feel the ungratefulness comes in. I think he has been feeling a little bit of that. But this is the way it goes. Today they will say you are the best and tomorrow they will crucify you. And what it takes to come back is to go out and accomplish a great knock once again. Then they will again say he is the best, Richards said.

Please explain the highlighted group of words.

Re: And what it takes to

But this is the way it goes. "But that is the way it goes" - that's what happens

And what it takes to come back is to go out and accomplish a great knock once again. Omit "And" : What it takes to [come back] is to [go out] and accomplish the great knock once again.

For (whoever it is that Richards is talking about) to recover his reputation, all he needs to do is go back out and score well.

Re: And what it takes to

Going out and accomplishing [the great knock] is what it takes in order for the player to come back to prominence.
