    Is "it" necessary?

    Hi

There I noticed how important it is to speak foreign languages nowadays.
I am not sure if "it" is necessary in this sentence.

    Thank you

    Re: Is "it" necessary?

    Hi Curmudgeon

Thank you for your reply. To understand the necessity of using "it" I think I should rearrange the sentences :
"There I noticed how important [to speak foreign languages] it is," although , in my opinion [ I don`t know why; I just feel so] "it" should be avoided here.
Have I thought it correctly ?

    Thank you.

    Hi Teia

I can try to give you a clue.
Ask yourself this question: "Is IT important to learn foreign languages?"

    The answer will be:

"Yes, it is. I just didn't realise how important IT actually is. I didn't realise how imoprtant IT is to learn foreign languages."

    here you have the "IT".

    Was this easier to understand?

How important something is I did not realize.
How important to learn a language is I did not realize.
How important to learn a language it is I did not realize.
Bianca's reasoning does not prove anything, IMO.
The word order necessitates there being a 'dummy it' in Teia's sentence.

    Re: Is "it" necessary?

    Hi!

I must say I don't agree with your formulation:

"How important to learn language is I didn't realize" (or the other examples). I would never express myself this way. Rather: "How important it is to learn a language I didn't realise." (if it has to be an inversion, that is.)

In Teia's example, if I should abide by her word order, I'd say: "There I realised how important speaking a foreign language (actually) is". No IT.
    That's my opinion, of course.
