    encounter, civilized time

    I wanted this encounter with the man I'd come to think of as a second father to be all emotion, embraces, tears. But I realized Otto would probably just shake my hand formally and we would have very civilized time and that would be that. I was prepared.

    Please explain the highlighted words.

    encounter = meet

    I'd come to think of = I had come to think of

    very civilized time = polite and good-mannered time

    Thank you Anglika.
    Could you tell me, some examples, how we have (polite and good-mannered time)?

    Re: encounter, civilized time

    Say you meet some friends, go to a bar, have too much to drink, make lots of noise, are rude to other people, shout, laugh loudly, pay no attention to the comfort of other people in the bar - that is what many would see as an uncivilized time.

    However, if you meet some friends, go to a nice restaurant where you all have a good meal, and talk quietly and pleasantly to each other, many would regard that as having a civilized time together.

    The text you are studying is about Otto Frank and a journalist who is working on his life, so the context is that their meeting (their first meeting) is likely to be restrained and polite, and not necessarily particularly friendly.
