    spur/stimulus/stimulation

Poverty can be a good spur/stimulus/stimulation to harder study.

Are the three words in bold all interchangeable here? Thanks.

    Re: spur/stimulus/stimulation

I tried to answer your question but I'm stumped. I would personally choose spur but I can't justify my choice.

Let's see what the other members have in mind (and most importantly, why!)

I am quite sure spur and stimulus are equally suitable here.
Stimulation means the application of a stimulus to a responsive structure.
It does not really work in the context.

    Re: spur/stimulus/stimulation

    My understanding:

Spur and stimulus are the fact of poverty imparted that elicit a response.
Stimulation is the act, process of setting off reaction. Stimulation is the revelation of facts in this case.

    Thanks, Noego and svartnik.
So, spur and stimulus are more synonymous than stimulation, right?
