    even though / while

At present, the European Union imports about one quarter of its gas and one third of its oil from Russia, while / even though countries such as Slovakia, Finland, Poland, Hungary, the Baltic states and the Ukraine are totally or very heavily dependent on Russian energy.

Should ‘while’ or ‘even though’ be used?

    Re: even though / while

    They have different implications.

"even though" = The EU is getting these supplies in spite of the fact that the other countries are dependent on the them.

"while" = in this context, The EU only needs 25% of its gas and 33.3% of its oil requirements from Russia, whereas the other countries are totally dependent on Russia for these supplies.

I think that 'while' is the more logical choice in this particular sentence.

To me, 'even though' would be better used this way:

Even though the European Union as a whole imports only about one quarter of its gas and one third of its oil from Russia, countries such as Slovakia, Finland, Poland, Hungary, and the the Baltic states are totally or very heavily dependent on Russian energy.
